A COUNTY couple celebrating their diamond anniversary today (Thursday, September 15) believe the secret to their success is working at their marriage.

Jack and Anne Woods, who lived in Monkland, near Leominster, for 37 years, will celebrate 60 years of marriage with family and friends.

The couple also believe admitting when you’re wrong is a big help.

Mrs Woods said: “You’ve just got to keep going, and not give up. We’ve had ups and downs but we’ve more than enough laughs to make up for it.

“You have to admit when you’re wrong, and young people just seem to want everything before they’re married. You’ve got to want to keep at it.”

The couple, who moved to Gobowen six years ago to be closer to their daughter, met when Jack was appointed organist and choirmaster at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Burghill in 1952 at the same time Anne was a choirgirl.

Mr Woods spent his whole working life as a watch and clock repairer and was an apprentice at Oswin and Co in Broad Street in 1949 before working in Leominster for 35 years.

His wife worked at the Old Priory Hospital as an assistant in the kitchen, starting early in the mornings preparing breakfast.

They have three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Life has not been easy at times for Anne as her husband has had many health problems during the last 60 years.

But her advice for youngsters getting married today is simple – 'keep working at it'.
