A WOMAN stole children's clothes from a Worcester supermarket after learning she had grandchildren.

Catherine Eaves admitted stealing the clothes worth £67 from Asda in Worcester when she appeared before magistrates in Worcester on Thursday.

The 42-year-old of Elmdon Road, Acocks Green, Birmingham stole the clothes on September 4 after renewing contact with her children and learning she had grandchildren for the first time.

Kulbir Paul, prosecuting, said: "It's a straightforward theft. She takes the items and walks outside. The goods are recovered."

Because the goods were recovered Mr Paul did not request compensation on behalf of Asda. Eaves made full and frank admissions in interview.

Mr Paul said: "She has recently got back in contact with her children and found she has grandchildren and wanted to impress her children. That is why she steals the items, presumably to give the items to them. She was tested for drugs and was positive for cocaine."

Her last conviction was in November last year for a section five public order offence and a theft. She also has previous convictions for theft.

Sunil Jagatia, defending, said: "Most of the items taken were children's clothes. She made full and frank admissions to the police in interview.

"She had been back in touch with her children and found out she had grandchildren. She decided to take some goods to impress the family. She accepts she has a lengthy record. She has been out of trouble for the last 10 months."

Eaves is on employment support allowance of £158 per fortnight.

Magistrates fined her £80, a victim surcharge of £30 and prosecution costs of £135. The money will be deducted from her benefits.
