A GREAT Witley preparatory school has kicked off a year of celebrations after reaching a landmark milestone.

Abberley Hall School is marking its centenary year and will celebrate with a host of events and initiatives throughout 2016 – the first of which was a service of commemoration at Worcester Cathedral on September 24.

The school, set in 90 acres of landscaped grounds caters 300 children aged from two to 13, was founded in 1916 with far fewer pupils on its books.

More than 500 people attended the commemoration, including pupils, parents, staff, friends and former pupils.

The service was followed by a reception and lunch back at the school and a political debate.

The discussion was between parent Mark Garnier, MP for Wyre Forest, and two former pupils who have gone on to become Members of Parliament - Philip Dunne, MP for Ludlow and Owen Paterson, MP for North Shropshire.

It was chaired by BBC diplomatic correspondent James Landale, another of Abberley’s alumni.

Headmaster Will Lockett said: “This academic year marks an important milestone for Abberley Hall and we are thrilled to have started it in such a successful manner.

“The service of commemoration and thanksgiving, led by the Bishop of Worcester The Rt Reverend Dr John Inge, was very special and it was wonderful to see so many people in attendance.”

Other events planned for the centenary year include a grand Christmas ball, a spring concert, a photographic competition and a grand prom and musical finale evening next summer.

Mr Lockett added: “There is a great deal of excitement throughout the school about our 100th anniversary year which is just getting underway.

“We will be hosting a range of celebrations and initiatives throughout the centenary year and the whole school community, past and present, will be warmly welcomed.”
