ALL is set for Bewdley to go quackers, as the annual Bewdley Duck Race takes place on New Year's Day.

Bewdley Bridge will be closed from 11.30am to 12.30pm on New Year's Day for the town's annual rubber duck race - which is organised by the Kidderminster and District Lions Club.

The event sees participants launch plastic ducks, many home-made, into the River Severn from the bridge on Load Street, with prizes awarded for the fastest duck and the best dressed duck.

Last year, the New Year’s Day event had to be cancelled due to high river levels in Bewdley making it unsafe for the Wyre Forest Canoe Club to take to the water and collect the 800 plus ducks in the water. Instead the annual race took place on Easter Monday.

It had been the third time in five years that the annual race had to be postponed due to the river conditions.

In 2016, the race saw more than 1,000 entrants dropping their ducks into the river, with more than £3,200 raised for community projects in Wyre Forest.

The winning duck belonged to Ebony Bate, while the best-dressed duck was awarded to Gabriella Boyle.

The town’s first duck race took place in 1985 and grown in popularity ever since, attracting many visitors as well as residents.
