LORRIES are causing a nuisance down a busy Worcester road, with concerns they are clogging up the route and creating potential safety concerns.

In recent weeks large HGV vehicles have been spotted parked up in Spetchley Road near Worcestershire County Council's HQ.

Some of the road has double yellow lines but a large swathe of the route, at the top end near a small traffic island, has no such restrictions.

Some of the lorries are believed to be carrying building materials for the ongoing new estate being created off Kilbury Drive, or drivers looking for a resting point near the M5 on-route to another location.

Councillor Chris Mitchell, who lives in the road, says it is causing "real concern".

"We've got HVG vehicles parking up at the top end of Spetchley Road and it's a real concern," he said.

"I'm not sure why it's happening but this route is busy enough as it is, with kids and young children crossing it.

"I will keep on monitoring it but I want to talk to these drivers to find out why they are doing it."

He added: "Legally they might be allowed to park there but I don't think it's a suitable area for HGV lorries, the middle of a residential area."

A residents group which represents the area also says the road is suffering from traffic issues.

Keith Burton, from Spetchley Road Residents' Association, said: "You've got two schools down here, a new estate, and the county council is increasing the number of people working at County Hall.

"The road is horrendously busy, it's been worse since the new estate has been built.

"I've noticed lorries parked down the end of Spetchley Road, but the biggest issue around here is the speeding."

Worcester City Council has responded by saying it is "stepping up patrols" in the area to see if any vehicles need to be brought to book.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of this issue and will be stepping up patrols in the area in response to public concern.

"We will also be working closely with local police to resolve any further parking problems in the area."

Last year a traffic order along the road was altered so yellow line restrictions were extended, making it more tricky to find a parking space.

Jon Fraser, from the county council's highways team, said: "We would be prepared to consider changes in the traffic restrictions, but it would need to be initiated from the local county councillor."
