THE last surviving Mayor of a former Bewdley authority has died today (March 30) at the age of 79.

Eda Wormald, who served as a Conservative councillor on Wyre Forest District Council for the Habberley & Blakebrook ward from 1982 to 1986, died peacefully at her Bewdley home this morning.

Bewdley councillor Stephen Clee announced the news and paid tribute to Mrs Wormald and has asked for the Union Flag at the town’s Guildhall to be lowered as a mark of respect.

Before serving as a Wyre Forest District councillor, Mrs Wormald was the last Mayor of the former Bewdley Borough Council – holding office in 1971 to 1972.

Bewdley Borough Council was created in 1835 and ceased to exist when Local Government was reorganised and District Councils were created in 1974.

She was married to the late Graeme Wormald who passed away in January 2015.

Mr Wormald was also a former Wyre Forest District councillor and past Mayor of the current Bewdley Town Council from 1975 to 1978.

Councillor Clee said: “It’s with great sorrow I have to announce Mrs Eda Wormald has passed away peacefully today at her riverside home in Bewdley shortly before her 80th Birthday.

“Eda was a stalwart of the town and was heavily involved in Bewdley Conservative Politics for many years.

“She also supported many organisation and charities, schools, Carnival Committee, Civic Society and ladies section of the RBL throughout her life.

She added: “We do not see many elder statesmen that have been as actively involved in community organisations for so many years as Eda.

“It’s a sad day for the town and its people. I have asked for the Union Flag to be lowered at the Guildhall immediately and we will all say a pray tonight for Eda and their children and family. RIP.”

Councillor Clee added the funeral is being arranged and details will be released.
