CUSTOMERS and staff at a Kidderminster supermarket were quick off the mark to give a cash boost to the appeal to extend a young people’s outdoor adventure centre.

An Easter competition to win a chocolate bunny and hampers at the Tesco Express store on Comberton Hill raised £150 for the Next Generation Appeal.

Customer assistant Kellie Crowther, who is the store’s community champion, immediately decided to back the Kidderminster & District Scout Association project after reading about the launch last month.

Her eight-year-old son Callum is a Cub and her daughter Jorja, five, is a Rainbow with a district Guide group.

Appeal chairman Mike Thompson said: “It is great to have the support of Tesco so soon after our launch and we hope other businesses, organisations and individuals will follow suit to help us reach our target as quickly as possible.

“We have always enjoyed tremendous support from the Wyre Forest community and if anyone can help us with funds or materials for this special building project, we would be very grateful.”

The Scout association is aiming to raise £110,000 to add a 22-bed accommodation block and training facilities to its popular centre at Rhydd Covert next to West Midland Safari Park between Kidderminster and Bewdley.

The 45-acre woodland campsite is visited by thousands of boys and girls each year and enables them to learn practical life skills in a fun environment.

The extended facilities will open up new opportunities for even more young people to enjoy outdoor pursuits such as archery, rifle shooting, climbing, abseiling, orienteering, assault courses and caving.
