CHILDREN in Ludlow have been supporting a campaign to have a 20mph speed limit in the town.

Pupils from St Laurence’s C of E Primary School “Walking Bus” came out in the rain to lend their support to Ludlow’s Go Slow Day in aid of UN Global Safety Week.

Pupils, staff and parents happily braved the elements on their way to school to show their support for the campaign’s message “Save Lives - Slow Down”.

Members of the 20’s Plenty team paraded in Lower Galdeford to passing traffic and talking to pedestrians for the rest of the day.

The Go Slow Day was organized by Ludlow 21’s 20’s Plenty for Ludlow team who campaign for 20mph limits as the default speed for Ludlow without humps for most roads with exceptions as appropriate.

Pupils walking to school at St Laurence’s from housing estates to the east use the Lower Galdeford pedestrian crossing; the signs advising 20 mph on this stretch of road do not always attract the attention they should.

The campaigners say road risk is most affected by speed. Just by slowing down a little, we can create safer, healthier places to be.

They say people are seven times less likely to be killed if hit at 20mph rather than 30mph.

20’s Plenty for Ludlow is calling on Shropshire Councillors who control road speeds for a default lower speed limit of 20mph, through signage and driver education.
