A ROYAL guest was welcomed to a city charity after its founder received an MBE.

The Duchess of Gloucester visited New Hope, in Wells Road, Worcester to meet the staff and children.

The charity, which helps disabled children to learn and play, were also joined by Worcester MP Robin Walker, the lord lieutenant of Worcestershire Lt Col Patrick Holcroft and the mayor of Worcester, Cllr Steve Mackay, as well as other distinguished city representatives.

Jean Wilson, founder of New Hope, said: "It was a really wonderful visit, she was really easy to talk to and very knowledgeable she is a really lovely person.

"We were really honoured that she came to visit us and the children really enjoyed it, it gives them something special to remember."

The duchess, who is the husband of Prince Richard of Gloucester, the Queen's first cousin, was shown around the building by Mrs Wilson, meeting staff and the children.

Mr Walker said: "It is a wonderful way to celebrate a really amazing charity.

"It is brilliant from the area to have the duchess here.

"When Jean first told me her idea as a parliamentary candidate at the time it sounded too good to be true and I expected her to come back six months later needing help, but she came to me then to open the building.

"The charity is phenomenal and shows what can be done when people like Jean put their mind to it.

"It was great when Jean was given an MBE and the duchess of Gloucester coming to visit as well is brilliant.

Lt Col Holcroft said: "New Hope is an amazing charity and Jean Wilson and her team can be very proud of the work they have done.

"The visit is an excellent recognition of the work they have done."
