WORCESTER Festival Choral Society and its stand-in conductor have been praised by the Mayor of Worcester, Steve Mackay, for delivering a “brilliant concert performance” at Worcester Cathedral, last Saturday.

A choral society spokesman said: “The 140-strong choir brought a welcome breath of spring to the Cathedral by singing Haydn’s exciting celebration of the natural world, The Creation, to an audience of 350 music lovers – the same work the Society sang at its inaugural concert in 1862.

“Performing alongside us were international soprano, BBC Proms and TV star Sarah Fox, tenor John Bowen, bass Edward Seymour and the Meridian Sinfonia symphony orchestra.”

Ben Cooper, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, added: “This event was all the more memorable thanks to the energy of the chorus and exquisite soloist singing. The talking point of the evening was the masterful conducting of the Society’s accompanist, the deputy director of music at Worcester Cathedral, Christopher Allsop, who stood in at short notice for the choir’s usual conductor Dr Peter Nardone who was unwell.”

The Society’s next event is a ‘Come & Sing’ Verdi’s Requiem workshop day on Saturday April 7 at Worcester’s College Hall.
