TO celebrate the life of the founder of the suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst, residents are being invited to a commemorative ceremony at Redditch’s iconic bandstand.

As the UK continues to celebrate 100 years since the first women were given the vote, Redditch will be joining in with the celebrations by remembering one of the most famous suffragettes, Emmeline Pankhurst.

A wreath laying ceremony to honour Mrs Pankhurst will be taking place at the bandstand in Redditch town centre on Saturday, 28th July at 11am.

At the event, speeches will be given by Redditch MP Rachel Maclean, the mayor of Redditch councillor Juliet Brunner and other local women.

Schools and groups are being encouraged to take part in the ceremony to tell their stories of inspirational women.

After the commemorative ceremony, there will be tea and cake at Rees Community Café on Church Road.

The aim is to celebrate women in public office and community roles, and to inspire more women to get involved in politics.

Mrs Maclean said: “Redditch has a proud history of electing women to Parliament and I’m glad to see our town is continuing to play its part in celebrating 100 years since the first women were given the vote.

“Everyone is invited to the Emmeline Pankhurst commemoration, men included, so we can all come together and show our support for women in public life.

“Please do come along to show your support. Rosettes, banners and costumes in the suffragette purple, white and green colour scheme are strongly encouraged.”
