THE Moreton Show Home and Garden team will be returning to Fosseway Garden Centre in Moreton on Easter Monday (April 2) with their ‘Moreton Show - Have A Go’ sessions for children.

Show organisers are hoping to encourage more children and young people to enter the classes in the Home and Garden section at this year’s show on Saturday, September 1.

Children will be able to try their hand at making a miniature garden in a seed tray, with all compost and plant material for the workshops supplied by the garden centre.

The youngsters will take away their mini-gardens and it’s hoped they’ll be inspired to get creative for the show.

Gill Godwin, from Fosseway Garden Centre – who is also chief steward for the Moreton Show children’s classes - said: "We hope families will come and take a look and that we can show them that taking part in our classes is a lot of fun.

"It’s great for children to make that connection with the food on their plates and we hope we can enthuse the next generation about vegetables, fruit and flowers."

Chris Small, chairman of the Stow on the Wold Allotments Association and team leader of the vegetable section at Moreton Show, said: ‘We like to encourage newcomers to showing fruit and veg and we’re especially keen to see children taking part.

"Last Easter’s sessions at Fosseway Garden Centre were great fun and we’re hoping to see lots of children and their mums and dads again this year."

There will be a display of decorated fruit and vegetables to give children ideas for entering classes at the show.

In addition, they’ll be able to get advice on growing potatoes for the potato in a pot class, where children can collect a seed potato and a 10 litre pot from the Fosseway Garden Centre, plant their potato in soil or compost and care for it until show day, when stewards will empty the pots and weigh each entry in public.

There will also be a bouncy castle and children’s treasure hunt.

Mr Small will be on hand on Easter Monday with advice for growing fruit and veg for showing.

Moreton Show is one of the biggest one-day agricultural shows in the country and there are plenty of classes to get involved in, from the biggest onions to the Sybil Limbrick Trophy for the best family entry.

Details of all the classes to enter in every section are available on the Moreton Show website at www.moretonshow.co.uk.
