PRIMARY schools in Warwickshire are being given the chance to enter a competition to name one of the county council's new gritting trucks.

The winning entry will receive an iPad for their school and a gift voucher for the pupil or class who choose the winning name.

Councillor Richard Chattaway, chair of the council’s Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee said: "Our winter gritting teams work hard to keep people safe on Warwickshire roads. Asking children to name one of our new trucks helps make them aware of the fleet’s important role and helps them to understand more about what the council does."

The county council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways and Transport Councillor Peter Butlin and Strategic Director for the Communities Monica Fogarty will judge the competition.

Councillor Butlin, will also visit the winning school with the gritter and will present the prizes. He said: “The competition is a fun way to raise awareness of the fantastic work that our drivers do in all conditions and at all times of the day and night. This competition has been popular in the past and I’m looking forward to judging the entries again.”

The competition prize has been provided by County Highways contractor Balfour Beatty. The closing date for entries is 12 December.
