THE village of Willersey is beginning to mark the 170th anniversary of the first school.

Events are being planned in the coming months to celebrated the milestone with the first taking place on Friday (December 19).

At 1.30pm the village will come together to watch the children release 170 blue and yellow balloons. Afterwards the guests will enjoy coffee and mince pies.

Headteacher, Mark Jackson, said: "This special anniversary has given all the children a genuine curiosity for the past and they are all looking forward to the celebrations.

"I am hoping we might welcome back some of the the older former pupils so that they can pass on the tales of their school days to our youngsters."

Preparations are in full swing for other events and in January the children will also be making a time capsule, with each child placing an item inside, to be opened on the 200th anniversary.
