LABOUR General Election candidate for Stratford Professor Jeff Kenner has pledged to reverse "devastating cuts" to education.

Professor Kenner previously stood for Labour in the 2015 General Election where he came third scooping 6,677 votes.

Nadhim Zahawi (Conservative) won with 29,674 votes, Edward Fila (UKIP) came second with 6,798.

Data compiled by National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers show schools are set to take a £3 billion a year cut by 2020.

This suggests 99 per cent of schools will have per pupil funding cut to the average loss of £403 for each primary school pupil and £554 per secondary school student.

"If elected, I’ll write immediately to the Secretary of State for Education demanding a reversal of the devastating cuts to our schools,” said Professor Kenner.

"Alcester Grammar School is projected to lose £691 per pupil and 10 teachers. Redundancies have started at local primary schools. Labour will invest in schools, reverse the cuts and reduce class sizes.

"In 2015, the Conservatives said that their funding formula would help local schools but Warwickshire faces cuts of £28 million."

He also said he would write to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt calling for intervention to stop the further loss of services at the Horton and Alexandra hospitals.

He said: "We’ve already lost acute beds and maternity services, and A&E services are vulnerable. Labour will put the NHS first and reduce waits for GP appointments and cancer tests."

He also said that if Brexit threatens businesses, jobs and livelihoods in Stratford-on-Avon he will vote against it in Parliament.

He said: "As prices rise, and as the clock ticks towards a hard Conservative Brexit, it’s essential that MPs act in the national interest. In the referendum we did not vote to make ourselves poorer by leaving the Single Market and Customs Union.

"Ultimately, if it becomes clear that leaving the EU will not be in the national interest, and it no longer has public support, we must put the issue back to the people."

He added: "If you’re fed up with having a part-time Conservative MP who has failed to secure investment to ease traffic chaos, who has broken his promises on school funding, and who has presided over rising NHS waiting times, I urge you to give me your support."
