THE Hive is launching its first family digital festival.

The event will showcase a fantastic variety of digital activities, including Minecraft, virtual reality and using Raspberry Pi, a credit card sized computer to control the weather.

The bookable sessions are at 5pm, 5.45pm, 6.30pm and 7.15pm on Thursday, 28 June from 4.30pm to 8pm and cost £3.95 per child.

Children aged seven to 14 can book on to LEGO Mindstorms and Coding sessions which enable them to learn the basics of programming to navigate their LEGO robot around a course.

Children interested in learning code to create computer games can join in the free Coding Playground sessions, courtesy of Barclay’s Bank.

They will use SCRATCH code to build an animated shark and catch as many fish as possible. The sessions are at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm.

For children who love to build, there is a robot competition for two age categories, the under-7s and seven and above. The robots must be no more than 30cm wide and 40cm high.

The prize for the winner of each category is two tickets for West Midlands Safari Park.

Children should bring their robots to The Hive for judging on the night.

Janine Downes, library manager at The Hive, said: “The digital activities we have hosted at The Hive have always been really popular with both children and parents.

"Our Code Club is oversubscribed and the digital demonstrations and talks at our Science and Space Nights have drawn crowds of interested families.

"We are living in a Digital Age and this Festival seemed like a great way to showcase new technologies and give people the opportunity to learn something they might not otherwise know.

“There will be plenty to join in with on the night, but the LEGO Mindstorm and Coding tickets are selling very quickly, so book on soon to avoid disappointment."
