YOUNG pupils from a Worcester school have taken part in the county’s Chess Megafinal.

After getting through school and club preliminary rounds, children from the River School took part in the competition arranged as part of the British Land UK Chess Challenge and held at Worcester University.

Rosettes and cups were awarded by Worcestershireborn Grandmaster Keith Arkell, current English chess champion.

Teacher at the school Stephanie Boyd said: “The event was very well organised and it was great to see the pupils smiling and enjoying themselves whether they won or lost a round. All the pupils had a great day.”

Two of the pupils, Ben Hunt and Dan Boyd, have got through to the North of England Gigafinal at Oldham in July and if they do well there, they will get through to the Terafinal in London to compete for a prize of £2,000.

Mrs Boyd said: “Parents and pupils want to thank teacher Steve East who runs the chess club in school and made arrangements and supported the pupils entrance into the competition.”
