Pershore go fifth after stylish rout
12:00pm Thursday 25th October 2012 in Sport
PERSHORE Rugby Club stormed to a 50-3 victory over struggling Worcestershire rivals Redditch in Midlands Three West (South).
They continued their run of good form with a comprehensive success at Piddle Park which moved them up to fifth in the table.
Pershore number eight Martin Hope opened the scoring after less than two minutes, barging over for an unconverted try from the base of a scrum.
The home side’s dominance in all areas, particularly the setpiece, was evident from early on.
This was highlighted when the Pershore pack set up a drive from a line-out 25 metres from the Redditch line.
They had the power to drive the opposition back for Ben Humphries to score a try which was converted by Scott Williams.
Steve Holmes crossed after his centre partner Tommy Hayes made a break and soon after Hope crossed for his second, converted by Williams.
At the break, all Redditch had to show for their endeavours was a solitary penalty.
The second period started well for Pershore when Holmes bagged his second after a strong break and an even more solid hand-off saw him dive under the posts for a converted try.
Hayes got among the scorers soon after with audacious interpassing between him and fullback Damian Hanson opening a big enough gap to score a converted effort under the posts.
Within a few minutes, Hayes bagged his second, this time out wide, before Pershore completed the scoring with another break by Hope from close range at the base of the scrum, completing a well-deserved victory and his hat-trick.
Pershore have a tougher test on Saturday when they host third-placed Woodrush (3pm).
- On the football pitch, Scott Finnegan and Dane Aldington netted for Pershore Town in a 2-2 draw at Castle Vale JKS in the Athium Midland Combination Premier Division.
The handy away point kept Town above their hosts on goal difference in the lower reaches of the table.
