Willersey's 'A' team's plan comes together for victory

THE second round of playoffs in the Cotswold League 'A' Team Championships was completed with improving Willersey coming out on top.

Toby Lee, Oliver Hedges and Ozzie Summerhill scored in quick succession to leave St Mary’s (Broadway) with no chance of a comeback.

St Mary’s played Mickleton, who had high hopes of progressing, and won 1-0 when Angus Grelak’s shot was deflected over the keeper's head into the net.

Mickleton needed to win by three goals to have a hope of qualifying but Summerhill opened the scoring for Willersey.

Alice Reast levelled only for George Smith to put Willersey back ahead before keeper Haylie Summerhill defied Mickleton.

Demi Coyne levelled again but the 2-2 draw left Willersey top of the group, St Mary's second and Mickleton bottom.

In the other pool, Bledington defeated Temple Guiting 2-0 thanks to two unstoppable shots by Ben Bright.

Temple Guiting beat Tredington 2-0 through Richard Lamb and Max Pinkham, while Bledington and Tredington looked set for a 0-0 draw until Bright gave the former the win.

In the 10th place match, Mickleton beat Tredington 1-0 through Bas James- Kraan’s goal.

For eighth spot, St Mary’s outshot Temple Guiting to progress from a 1-1 draw with Jamie Haines and Pinkham netting respectively.

The qualifying final saw Bledington lead the shot count 6-5 against Willersey with seconds left.

Haylie Summerhill and Bledington’s Rueben Orr were in top form but Willersey earned a slice of luck when the ball fell to Ozzie Summerhill who buried a first-time shot from close range.

Today, five 'B' teams meet, while the best 'A' sides do battle next Tuesday, the girls play some of last week’s missed games and the top group decide who will contest the final on Thursday.

The snow disrupted the first set of girls’ league fixtures in 2013 but four teams made it to Chipping Campden.

Mickleton scored four against and did the same to St Catharines.

Ilmington’s matches with Dormer House and St Catharines were both goalless.
