Littleton remain in title hunt after win

LITTLETON maintained their challenge at the Athium Midland Combination Premier Division summit by completing the double over Southam United.

They registered a 3-0 home win but the visitors had more of the play only to be denied by centre-halves Simon Fitter and Tim Beattie.

Littleton’s strikers Jamie Clarke and Joe Lolley were much sharper with the latter having a seventh-minute effort smothered by the keeper after Beattie broke up play and hit a long ball.

But Clarke put the hosts ahead two minutes later when he fastened onto a through-ball and sidefooted past the advancing goalkeeper.

At the other end, a fine save by Jack Dell from a longrange shot protected Littleton’s lead.

After 40 minutes, they doubled their lead through Clarke who calmly lobbed home from Joe Walsh’s pass.

For periods of the secondhalf, Southam dominated play but without creating any real opportunities.

The game was put to bed on 75 minutes when Clarke received the ball on the right and switched play to Lolley whose first-time 18-yarder gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Littleton make their third visit of the season to Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday for a Smedley Crooke Memorial Trophy second-round clash (3pm).

They then host high-flying Nuneaton Griff next Tuesday or Wednesday (7.45pm).
