ASHTON-under-Hill moved up to second in Cotswold Hills League Division One with a thrilling three-run victory over promotion rivals Leamington thirds.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Ashton’s 211-9 in 45 overs was built around 62 from consistent opener Richard Cooper against a strong bowling attack.
Cooper was well supported by Alex Porter (17), Elliot Seal (26) and captain Will Archer (24 not out). Promising young seamer Matthew Davison took 2-10.
In reply, Leamington got off to a flier thanks to openers David Hawkes and Liam Killian until the former was stumped off Sam Cope for 14.
Killian continued to dominate but wickets started to tumble at the other end.
When Killian (73) was caught by Archer off Jack Perks (3-48), the momentum swung towards Ashton.
But positive late-order hitting left Leamington needing six to win off the last three balls through the final pair Davison and Chris Calcott.
After scrambling a two, a dot ball followed and, with four needed, Calcott hit Perks’ last ball of the innings straight to Archer as Leamington were dismissed for 208.
Matt Wakefield bowled well to finish with 3-26 off seven overs, while Archer and Sam Cope both picked up two victims.
