Ten-man Robins denied victory in eight-goal tie

EVESHAM United were involved in an eight-goal thriller in their Calor Southern League Division One South and West opener at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium.
Despite playing nearly an hour with 10 men, Shaun Cunnington’s new-look side were only denied victory by Steve Murray’s equaliser for Taunton Town two minutes from time.
The visitors opened the scoring after just six minutes when Chris Young created the opening for Rodney Marsh who shot beyond keeper John Batemen.
But two goals in as many minutes saw United go ahead. Marcus Palmer held off several defenders before finding the net to level.
Then, on 21 minutes, Carl Brown fired United into a 2-1 lead with a first-time shot past keeper Lee Matthews.
Leading up to half-time, Evesham’s cause was not helped when midfielder Neil Barnfield was sent off for dangerous play.
During the interval, both goalkeepers were substituted after picking up injuries.
The 48-year-old goalkeeping coach Tim Clarke replaced Bateman and Owen Irish took over for Taunton.
Clarke picked the ball out of the net first when ex-Evesham defender Lewis Tasker drove in from 20 yards to make it 2-2 on 65 minutes.
Ten-man Evesham came storming back to edge ahead with 13 minutes left as Matt Sysum headed in Mitchell Botfield’s free-kick at the back post.
Evesham’s joy was shortlived when Tasker’s freekick beat Clarke to level proceedings.
In a frantic end, the outstanding Sysum got his second goal, again heading home a Botfield free-kick.
But, with two minutes left, Peacocks substitute Murray pounced to earn the Somerset outfit a share of the spoils, slotting home from close range.
Evesham: Bateman (Clarke 45), Jackson, Wilson, Millard, Sysum, Botfield, Brown (Holloway 80), Barnfield, Palmer, Dovey, Tambling. Subs not used: Rodrigues, Gould, Williams. Attendance: 163.
