Ellis among scorers as Pershore advance

PERSHORE booked their place in the third round of the Midlands Senior Vase with a 31-20 victory over Shrewsbury at Piddle Park.
An entertaining first-half saw the visitors open the scoring with a long-range penalty only for Pershore to respond immediately.
Right winger Andy Jenkinson broke through the centres from a line-out, setting up a series of driving runs from the forwards to lay on a try for Damo May.
Pershore continued to play an expansive game with the backs seeing plenty of the ball and their forwards enjoyed dominance in the scrum. Centre Stefan Ellis scored a trademark try, finishing off another set move for the home side, with scrum-half and captain Lewis Dolphin converting.
Shrewsbury managed a further three points but did not look like penetrating the Pershore defence.
They did, however, get a converted try when Toby Grace became isolated close to the Shrewsbury line, the defenders turned the ball over and quickly spread it wide for the visitors’ winger to chase his own grubber kick and touch down.
Hosts’ number eight Stephen Holmes made the halftime score 19-10 when he broke from the base of the scrum. He used his trademark hand-off to get round the Shrewsbury winger to score in the corner, Dolphin again converting.
Heavy rain affected the quality of rugby on display in the second-half, but Pershore played a sensible game and were awarded several penalties, pushing the opposition back and using their driving line-out to win the territorial battle.
Holmes launched another attack from the base of the scrum and skilfully passed the ball back inside to supporting Josh Hardiman who capped another impressive performance with a try from close range, again converted.
Pershore’s only other score came from Ellis who outpaced the opposition to score in the corner.
Shrewsbury scored a consolation converted try under the posts, making the final score 31-20.
- Pershore Rugby Club’s under eights minis tag team lost 8-4 to Tewkesbury at their Wyre Piddle ground.
Oscar Reynolds, Andrew Thorner, William Rimmell, and Cain Groom scored the tries.
