Home tests for improving Evesham United

12:31pm Thursday 23rd January 2014

EVESHAM United face two home games in four days as they seek to cement a mid-table berth in Calor Southern Football League Division One South and West.

The Robins host lowly Didcot Town on Saturday (3pm) before taking on leaders Merthyr Town at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium next Tuesday (7.45pm).

While their opponents are at different ends of the table, Evesham know a good points return would make their own position look much healthier.

Paul Collicutt's side will look to stretch their unbeaten run following a 1-1 draw at Clevedon Town and 5-0 home thrashing of Thatcham Town.

The Evesham manager said: "We have got Merthyr, who are top of the table, and Didcot, who are just below us. I will be looking to try and take all six points.

"But, on paper, the Merthyr game looks the harder of the two. It's important we can be positive and take the chances that come our way and, if we can do that, hopefully we can go on and win the game.

"A couple of wins can lift you up the league and we are desperate to get back-to-back victories."

United are without defender Dan Watkin (rib) and striker Carl Brown, who damaged his shoulder colliding with an advertising board during the Clevedon draw.

Marcus Jackson was sent off for violent conduct but his three-game ban does not start until February 1.

Collicutt was pleased with his side's display in north Somerset but thought they deserved more than a point.

"The lads had their heads down in the changing rooms and it felt like they had lost rather than gained a point," he added.

"We were disappointed in not taking the three points. We created an awful lot of chances and whereas we took them against Thatcham, this time we didn't.

"The one positive that came out of it was the amount of chances created but we have got to start taking more of them."

Centre-half Alton Axton has completed his three-match suspension and is back in contention.
