County boosted by chief Percy's £500,000-plus

WORCESTERSHIRE County Cricket Club chairman Martyn Price has ploughed more than half-a-million pounds into the New Road club during his seven-year tenure.

Price’s benevolence to the County was revealed at the club’s annual general meeting at New Road.

The 2014 season will be Price’s last one at the helm due to the eight-year rule that limits the term a chairman can serve.

During the meeting, Steve Taylor, chairman of haulage firm TM Logistics, was unanimously elected onto the board as a non-executive additional director and could be in line to replace Price as chairman.

Price, widely known as ‘Percy’, was brought into the club by then-chairman and current president John Elliott after changes to the constitution allowed the appointment of individuals from outside of the existing board of directors.

Former Worcestershire player Elliott, who is also serving the final year of his presidency this year, head-hunted Price as someone he believed could provide a cash injection to swell the New Road coffers.

Price provided the club with £500,000 when he became chairman and has also written off a loan of £85,000 in the last financial year.

On top of this generosity, Price was able to call upon his business associates and the club’s membership to raise more than £200,000 through his ‘Flood Club’ initiative in the wake of the devastating floods of 2007 that cost the County £1million.

During the last 10 years, the club have invested approximately £7million on comprehensive redevelopments of New Road, including the Basil D’Oliveira Stand, the Graeme Hick Pavilion and the recently-completed facilities.

Meanwhile, County chief executive David Leatherdale revealed the club are expecting New Road to have recovered sufficiently from the recent severe flooding in time to host Kent in the opening competitive home game of the forthcoming season on Sunday, April 13.
