OLYMPIC champion and former Evesham Rowing Club ace Alex Gregory won at the GB Rowing team senior trials.

The 2012 gold medallist from Wormington, near Broadway, and his men’s pair partner Moe Sbihi were quick off the start in their 'A' final and seemed set for a comfortable victory.

But Molesey’s Andrew Triggs Hodge, also a 2012 winner, and George Nash edged back to gain an overlap with 500 metres to go in Caversham, near Reading.

For a few seconds with 250m left, Triggs Hodge and Nash seemed to move ahead before 30-year-old Gregory and Sbihi, of the Leander Club and Molesey respectively, responded to win by inches.

Alan Sinclair and Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell finished third, while Chipping Campden rower Matt Gotrel, 25, was fourth with Paul Bennett.

Sbihi said: “Greggers made the call and we went for it. It was the killer blow.”
