EVESHAM’S Simon Andrews was still in a critical condition in hospital today after crashing at Saturday’s North West 200 motorcycling road races in Northern Ireland.
The Vale rider, 30, was taken by helicopter to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, following the accident in the Superstock race.
Andrews, who rides for the Penz13.com BMW team, was part of a large group of riders near the top of the field.
His family are believed to be at his bedside in the Belfast hospital.
He has a history of bad injuries, including accidents at Thruxton and the Isle of Man TT as well as at last year’s Le Mans 24-hour race.
Andrews suffered leg, arm, shoulder, rib and back injuries in a multi-bike collision at Le Mans.
Saturday’s accident happened at the Metropole section of the 8.9-mile North West circuit.
It was the second serious incident at this year’s NW200 meeting.
On Tuesday, Franck Petricola crashed during a practice session.
The 31-year-old Frenchman was also being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital and his condition was described as critical.
Meanwhile, Ballymoney rider Michael Dunlop was the star of this year’s races, walking away with the man-of-the-meeting trophy.
Dunlop won the Superbike and shortened Superstock races, taking home a cheque for £2,500.
