Evesham in second but Stratford clinch tennis title again

EVESHAM cannot win the Wildmoor Spa Tennis League Premier Division despite an emphatic 4-0 victory over mid-table Alcester.

Runaway leaders Stratford sealed the title for the 12th year in succession after a 4-0 win over Claverdon.

They head the table with 42 points and Evesham have 25 with only 12 more on offer.

The runners-up spot is still up for grabs with Ardencote Manor dropping back after losing 3-1 to Littletons, who pulled another two points clear of the relegation zone.

Fourth-placed Henley-in-Arden were held 2-2 by bottom side Inkberrow.

Evesham's Chris Francis and Rob Noble beat Alcester's Stuart Beach and Henry Williams 6-2, 6-1 and Barney Williams and Chris Harris 6-2, 6-2.

Simon Wall and Paul Everatt saw off Barney Williams and Harris 6-2, 6-2 and Beach and Henry Williams 6-2, 6-1.

Sean Witheford and Dave Rudge shone for Littletons, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Ardencote’s Ben Summers and Paul Silk and 6-2, 6-0 against John Turner and John Brain.

Jack Philpott and Chris Elliott beat Turner and Brain 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) after a championship tie-break but lost to Summers and Silk 6-1, 6-2.

Henley's Max Retallack and John Hunt lost to Inkberrow's Matt Saunders and Gordon Keir 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) but then beat Chris Dixon and Mike Baker 6-2, 6-3.

Brett Mackay and Emanuel Vaxler edged out Dixon and Baker 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) but lost to Saunders and Keir 6-3, 7-5.

Pershore could only manage a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Shipston to go one point clear of Studley 'B' in second spot in Division One.

In Division Two, Whitnash upset leaders Moreton-in-Marsh 'A' 4-0 and are six points behind Moreton with a game in hand. Stratford 'B' dropped to third after being held 2-2 by fourth-placed Bidford 'A'.

Inkberrow 'B' remained second in Division Three after consolidating their promotion aim with a 3-1 win over Ilmington, who dropped into a relegation battle.

FISSC overtook Wildmoor 'A' for third place when they beat bottom team Chipping Campden 'B' 3-1.

In Division Four, leaders Henley-in-Arden 'B' had a week off, which gave Alcester 'C' an opportunity to cut their lead to four points when they defeated Littleton 'B' 3-1.

Snitterfield claimed a valuable 4-0 win over bottom team Campden 'C', leaving them and Littleton 'B' looking doomed to relegation. HDA 'B' took a big step closer to the Division Five title when they defeated nearest rivals Pershore 'B' 3-1.

Inkberrow 'C' drew 2-2 with Bidford 'B' as did Wildmoor Spa 'B' and Inkberrow 'D'.
