EVESHAM’S Jenny Jackson and Rosie Macdonald secured gold medals in the West Midlands junior regional rowing trials in Worcester.

The duo’s success proved to be a highlight among plenty of impressive racing performances by the boys and girls from the town club’s talented junior squad.

Jackson and Macdonald triumphed in the doubles, while there were silvers for Issy Clarke, Alex Lacey and Ed Bragg in the singles.

Doubles silvers went to Lacey and Tom Woodward as well as Sophie Evans and Sian Bird.

The crew of Bird, Gilly Russell, Evans, Maddy Hargreaves and cox Katie Griffiths also finished runners-up.

Max Pearson and Evans secured singles bronzes as did the double of Bragg and Tom Lacey.

Hargreaves, Esme King-Jones, Bird, Russell and cox Griffiths made up a bronze-winning crew.

There were also third places for Ellie Lewis, Ellie Hughes, Lucy Roper and Izzy Powell along with Becca Parkin, Kate Ballentine, Katie Wormersley, Immy Sneath and cox Jackson.

Evesham rowers also showed determination in the OarSport junior sculling head at Buckinghamshire’s Eton Dorney, which hosted the sport in the London 2012 Olympics.

The crew of Clarke, Jaymee Lucking, Lucy Heal, Sophie Stoddart and cox Bragg finished 10th out of 48.

Bird, Russell, Evans, Roanne Foister and cox Griffiths came 11th out of 58.

Jackson, Georgii Bragg, Becky Goodwin and Jess Ellis managed 15th out of 23.

Evesham head coach Paul Redgwell said: “These were very good results from a small rowing club competing against and beating some of the best public schools in the country.

“This is a good start in the build-up to the national competition at the end of May.”

Meanwhile, Evesham held their rowathon ergo challenge at Evesham Country Park in aid of their appeal for funds to purchase a new lightweight boat.

With the combined effort of more than 100 athletes, coaches and the general public, the target to row 346 kilometres in six hours on machines was easily beaten with a total of 400.6km.

The enthusiastic members of the public, the youngest of whom was aged just five, contributed 11.5km to the cause.

Evesham mayor Charlie Homer impressed many veterans with his fitness, contributing more than 4.5km to the total in his 20-minute slot.

A club spokesman added: “The club would like to thank Evesham Country Park and Maria Hughes for making the site facilities available and to the public who contributed to this fantastic day.”
