IN ''Save our scenery'', ''Kilts

degraded'' and ''Not true patriots'' I read three examples on the one page of the parochial attitude which holds this nation back (Letters, March 4). Scotland's greatest asset is not its scenery. That is an argument based

on heather and tartan. Scotland's greatest asset is its people. The figures from our history that we should be inspired by are our engineers, architects, artists and sportsmen. You cannot build a nation on a historic figure such as Wallace and you build a windfarm where it is windy, not where it will look nice.

The saddest aspect of cheap foreign kilts is that they are imported. Why don't we manufacture them ourselves and keep the profits in the country?

I would like to see our talented engineers and architects building powerful 21st-century windfarms to reduce the pollution of our beautiful scenery while we cheaply manufacture tartan ''tat'' for the tourists. Traditional kilt-makers will do well selling to the discerning market.

I am a true patriot. I am Scottish, British and European. You don't need to be a nationalist to be a patriot.
