McMAHON Kelburne were last night left to reflect upon what might have
been in the men's indoor hockey cup final at the Bell's Sports Centre in
Perth after they were beaten 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.
With just three minutes of the final remaining Kelburne led MIM 3-1
and the trophy looked destined for Whitehaugh in Paisley.
But as the pressure mounted they lost composure and David Ralph
received a temporary suspension for a reckless tackle.
During his two minutes in the sin bin, Andrew Kay converted a penalty
corner for MIM and, with a minute remaining, a through ball was
propelled in the direction of Gavin Markum in front of goal. It appeared
to bounce illegally off his stick, but he was allowed to run the ball
into the net and level the scores. It was a cruel blow for Kelburne, who
were by far the better side.
MIM, despite being without their two English internationalists, Ian
Jennings and Jon Roberts, made the running in the early stages
encouraged by a second-minute goal from Stevie Grubb. But when Billy
Anderson equalised three minutes later the trophy appeared as though it
might well go to the West Coast for the first time.
Two further goals by the player of the tournament, Gordon Moore, in
the second and third quarters, enhanced the prospects of that
possibility, but a moment of recklessness and a piece of bad luck was to
leave the Kelburne men in a state of shock. Results:

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
