RUTH Masters and Vina Kite won the Huntington Cups competition at Evesham Golf Club.

Twenty-eight ladies played for the two silver trophies, which were donated in 1934, making them some of the oldest cups at the club.

The drawn pairs played a foursome game as Masters and Kite bagged 80 points to finish ahead of the second-placed Verity Lawrance and Jean Bevan on 81.5.

Bevan celebrated a hole-in-one on the tenth at Bewdley’s Wharton Park in a Droitwich League match for her third ace.

The seniors at the Fladbury club held their David Taylor Trophy flag competition, with Ian Tait winning.

Wet, challenging conditions saw many competitors head for an early shower but six hardy members completed the challenge.

The competition was tight with Ian Facer running out of shots on his 16th hole.

Seniors’ captain Mike Brumage, Mick Hocking and Martin Williams had varying success on their 17th.

The latter secured third place.

Malcolm Hiscock and Tait both reached their 18th hole with one and three shots left respectively.

The victory went to Tait with Hiscock runner-up.

Meanwhile, the men’s Founders Cup was played at Broadway for a trophy donated to the club in 1925 in memory of founder Dr C T Standring.

With the weather set fair, conditions were near-perfect as 70 men competed for the prestigious trophy.

Bringing in 70 nett to take victory was John Tookey, with Mark Evans a close runner-up on 71.

Taking third and fourth positions respectively on count-back were Matt Magee and Paul O’Hagan, who also achieved lowest gross with 76.

The ladies’ LGU Peugeot coronation foursomes match had a dreary and damp start.

Going through to qualify for the area finals were winners Hazel Balding and Esther Pettitt, with 31 points.

Just losing out on count-back were Louise Foulkes and Bev Howard in second place, and Maggie McDivitt and Veronica Rudd in third spot.

Annabelle Carter and Liz Smith came fourth with 30.

Sunshine and showers greeted Broadway’s seniors for their open competition.

With more than 40 clubs participating, the field attracted 133 keen golfers with the winner Paul Whitehouse travelling from Royal Fremantle club in Perth, Australia.

He scored 38 points on a course he had never played before, ahead of Handsworth’s B Howe (37 on count-back) and Redditch’s Iain Sidford.

Fourth and fifth positions were also decided on count-back, with Tadmarton’s Robert Branch earning 37 along with home player Len Flint.
