WORCESTERSHIRE Rapids’ skipper Daryl Mitchell insists his players will be going all out to win tonight’s NatWest T20 Blast against Lancashire Lightning at New Road (5.30pm).

The Rapids have created a slice of club history after securing their first ever home quarter-final in the competition.

The County will finish in the top two of the North Group irrespective of what happens in the final round of matches.

Last month, a massive six by Ben Cox off the penultimate ball from James Faulkner sealed victory for Rapids over Lightning at Old Trafford.

Mitchell says it’s vital Rapids keep their momentum towards the aim of reaching finals day at Edgbaston for the first time.

He said: “In terms of qualification, tonight’s result does not matter too much but it’s another big home game and we will be going all out to win it in front of our fans.

“It’s important to keep improving and, as a team, it will be a huge thing if we can keep the confidence high and the momentum going.

“It’s the first time the club have secured a home quarter-final and it will be massive from a playing point of view.

“A home quarter-final should create a lot of revenue, which is very important for a small county like us.

“I am sure we will have a sell-out crowd right behind us.”

Rapids’ overseas player Colin Munro has left to prepare for New Zealand’s one-day and T20 series in South Africa next month.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes has named a 13-man squad with the 10 players on duty in the win at Derbyshire Falcons last Friday plus Alexei Kervezee, Joe Clarke and Charlie Morris. Rapids were guaranteed a last-eight tie at New Road next month after local rivals Birmingham Bears defeated Northamptonshire Steelbacks by one run under the floodlights at Edgbaston.

But Rapids still have a chance of topping the North Group if they can win and the Bears slip up against Yorkshire Vikings.

Worcestershire have contested four previous quarter-finals — in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2014 — but all have been played away from home and ended in defeat for the County.

Rapids have won nine of their 13 group matches this term, including the last six away games in a new club record, to book their spot in the knock-out stages.
