ORGANISERS of Worcester and Valencia Residential Basketball Camp vowed to make it “bigger and better” next year after a “hugely successful” first staging of the summer event.

Coaches from Worcester Wolves and Valencia worked with more than 60 youngsters from throughout the UK and Europe to help them improve their basketball skills, while also embracing an alternative culture.

The week-long camp at the University of Worcester Arena saw skill stations, drills, individual work-outs and analysis as well as competitions and basketball games with youngsters receiving Valencia Basket clothing.

Spanish children and coaches on the camp also had English language classes.

The event comes after the University of Worcester and Wolves joined forces with the prestigious Spanish basketball team to form a “unique” partnership.

Valencia’s lead coach Juanjo Rojo said: “We have had an excellent week and enjoyed the hospitality of the university, which has made us all feel very welcome.

“We have been impressed with the attitude of the young players and working with the Worcester coaches has been a very positive experience.

“We are really looking forward to building on this partnership and returning next year for an even bigger and better camp.”

Wolves head coach Paul James said working with Spanish coaches had been “enjoyable and enlightening”.

“Their hunger for success, while ensuring enjoyment for the players, has been a key feature,” James said.

“We have spent the week exchanging ideas and developed an excellent team of coaches.”

The university’s deputy pro vice chancellor Mick Donovan added: “The camp has been a huge success and is an excellent first step in our exciting partnership with Valencia Basket.

“We have been privileged to host this prestigious club and believe we are setting the bar in terms of a unique residential basketball experience for aspiring young players.

“Clearly the social, cultural and educational benefits for the youngsters are also a significant factor.”

The two clubs signed a partnership agreement last year with the aim of promoting the exchange of expertise, knowledge and co-operation between staff and agreed basketball-related activities in education, health and wellbeing, social inclusion and youth engagement.
