NEW captain Marek Klassen says he “can’t wait” for Worcester Wolves’ season opener against Cheshire Phoenix tomorrow night (7.30pm).

The 24-year-old point guard is one of a host of summer signings who are poised to make their British Basketball League debut for Wolves at the University of Worcester Arena.

With the extra responsibility of leading the team, Klassen says he is determined to guide Worcester to glory this season.

“I have definitely come here to win things,” said the Canadian, who joined Wolves from Leeds Force.

“I can speak for the whole group and say we have got high expectations here.

“We have got a lot of great personalities and guys who really want to work hard and our motivations are unselfish, which is really nice.

“Obviously, we don’t have a full roster just yet but, from what I have seen, we have got a really good group of players.

“We have all come here to build a championship team as we want to win some silverware.”

Wolves have struggled to beat Cheshire in recent years, having lost their last five encounters, but Klassen did not believe that had a bearing on the match.

“Who cares about past records?” he said.

“They have got a brand new squad and we have got new players with a new programme, so it’s every man for themselves at the start of the season.

“I think it’s going to be a great match-up and I am really excited about it.

“I can’t wait for tonight’s match as I believe it’s going to be a great season for us.”

Klassen, who averaged 17.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists last season, said he had been impressed with the set-up at Wolves.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “The people in the organisation seem really nice, so it’s been a great experience so far.

“We are all professionals here and we are paid to play as hard as we can.

“I think I take extra responsibility (as captain) but I am already tough on myself to make sure I do my best in every game and every practice.”
