MICHAEL Weaver was in top form to lift the Baker Cup in a keenly-contested June Medal competition at Evesham Golf Club.

The triumphant Weaver carded 64 points to win the competition and he also finished top of Division Two with his impressive haul.

The Baker Cup was first contested by members in 1912 and is one of the most prestigious main board trophies at Evesham.

Weaver took the leading honour in the hard-fought competition after pipping Division One winner Richard Curnock.

Curnock shot 68 and had another reason to celebrate after securing the best gross score of the day.

Stuart Deacon was also in good form and achieved the the runner-up spot in Division Two with Chris Jewkes occupying third spot.

While Curnock topped Division One, Anthony Rock finished in second place and Andrew Jones took third position.

Jill Cleary carried off the All Comers Charity Trophy in gale-force conditions at Evesham.

Cleary received the trophy from Conryn Abbott after producing a storming score of 38 points.

Abbott was last year’s captain and stood in for this year’s captain, Eunice Allen, to make the presentation.

Lila Bailey originally donated the All Comers Charity Trophy and it is played for annually by the ladies’ section.

The conditions proved challenging for the 19 ladies who took part because the gusty winds blew some of the players off balance and sent bits of the trees flying in all directions.

The wind also blew the golf balls back and forth on the greens.

All money from the competition will now go towards the Acquired Brain Injuries Trust, the captain’s chosen charity.

Evesham's Graham Hughes and The Worcestershire’s Terry Cox finished third in the annual Seniors Open at Craycombe Links.

Evesham duo Mike Whiteford and Bill Dobie used course knowledge to their advantage to finish nearest the pin on the ninth and nearest the line on the fifth, respectively.

But Forest Hills pair David Shuttleworth and Trevor Hallett, who carded 47 points, clinched the top prize.

Kidderminster duo Mark Cox and Roger Price, who shot 46, took the runners-up spot.

Hughes and Cox also performed impressively after returning 45.

A field of 80 players played in pairs in the betterball stableford competition.

More than half the players came from clubs other than Evesham.

There were many good scores with the majority of the field achieving 40 points or more.

The course was in excellent condition and many visitors hailed Evesham for the excellent course and facilities.

Results: 1 David Shuttleworth and Trevor Hallet (Forest Hills) 47, 2 Mark Cox and Roger Price (Kidderminster) 46, 3 Graham Hughes (Evesham) and Terry Cox (The Worcestershire) 45.

Nearest the pin on the nine: Mike Whiteford (Evesham), Drive nearest the line on fifth: Bill Dobie (Evesham).

Tributes were paid to Steve Deakin for organising the successful event and all of the helpers.

Evesham’s seniors crashed to a 5-1 defeat against their Lilleybrook counterparts in Cheltenham.

The course at Lilleybrook was in excellent condition with the greens fast and true when the players teed off at 12.30pm.

Some fine golf was played by both teams and, after negotiating the back nine up and down the side of the Cotswolds, the players were glad to have a break.

Lilleybrook triumphed by five games to one.

The results were: Ian Wood and Steve Deakin lost by 4 & 2, Ian Facer and Richard Saville lost by 2 down, Malcolm Carnall and Mike Whiteford lost by 5 & 4, John Vaughan and Les Bond won by 3 & 2, Martin Williams and Alan Bees lost by 1 down, Bill Dobie and Doug Sharp lost by 1 down.
