Short form of golf set to prosper

POWERPLAY Golf, which aims to do for golf what Twenty20 did for cricket, is coming to Tewkesbury Park Golf Club.

Played over nine holes instead of the normal 18, PowerPlay Golf gives golfers two flags to aim at on every green. They score extra points if they PowerPlay' to the black flag, which is in an extra-hard position.

Keen golfers have praised the new initiative for being an attacking, exciting format of the classic game, in a faster timescale well-suited to modern life.

The format will soon be seen on television and more than 42 countries worldwide will be hosting events in 2008.

The UK is the first country to get PowerPlay Golf which only launched this summer and Tewkesbury Park is one of the first clubs to become an official venue.

Over one million golfers worldwide are predicted to become PowerPlayers' by the end of next year, with many countries running national championships.

Tewkesbury Park is hosting its first PowerPlay event on Friday, Septe-mber 7 and welcomes golfers from all over the region to experience a new way to play the sport Golf and Leisure Operations Manager, Declan Healy said: "We're looking forward to holding PowerPlay Golf events here. It takes half the time of a normal game and our members and visitors will love it.

"It has the X-Factor that only the best, simplest ideas have. It's exciting to be involved from the start of something that - we believe - will energise golf in the same way Twenty20 did for cricket!"

l SEVENTY-TWO members and their guest were in action at the Ladies Invitation at The Vale Golf and Country Club.

However, once again the weather turned against the competitors with heavy showers and lightning forcing organisers to reduce the event to nine holes so that all players could be included.

Lyn Robinson, partnered by Kerry Welding from Belmont took the top prize with 21 points.
