Payne nets clinching goal

Colwall 1, Bretforton Ladies 3 SATURDAY'S visitors to Ledbury Leisure Centre seemed to make heavy weather of returning home with the points.

Bretforton made a promising start after 15 minutes with a good run down the right from Kim Payne who pulled the ball back to Sophie Corbett to strike it into goal.

Colwall looked threatening on a number of occasions but good defensive play from Jane Wheeler, Sarah Cook, Kate Mitchell and Bobbie Handley prevented any shots at goal.

Deb Slatter was unlucky not to score with a shot from close-range that hit the keeper on the helmet but the second goal finally arrived when strong play in midfield allowed Payne to take the ball into the D where she pulled it back and Julie Hall netted.

Despite numerous chances to increase the lead even further, the Vale girls were thwarted by strong defending and good goalkeeping.

The second half saw some excellent play from player of the match Lisa Workman with some lovely attacking play and great passing that created a number of chances for the forwards but a finish was lacking.

Workman was unlucky not to score herself with three shots on goal but Colwall kept battling and pulled a goal back.

With their lead cut to a single goal, Bretforton persevered and made the points safe five minutes from time when Payne netted a fine solo effort. The match ball was sponsored by Birds with Brushes.

There is a week's break from league action this weekend with a trip to Newent on October 27 the next competitive fixture.
