Crews turn on style and reap rich rewards

THE younger members of Evesham's junior squad entered the prestigious Peterborough J14 regatta last Saturday when they enjoyed great success on the four-lane course.

Every crew entered returned home with a medal that earned the club a half share in the Victor Ludorum Trophy.

First to medal was J13 single sculler Ross MacIlldowie who held his own during the early part of the race and held his form to finish a creditable third.

J13 Tegan Parsons had even more work to do having to fight her way through a heat and a semi-final.

In the final she was up against two scullers from Norwich and one from the hosts but she showed an extremely cool and mature head to take gold.

J13 doubles pairing of Alex Russell and Wil Taylor took their final by storm to finish more than 30 seconds ahead of the second-placed crew.

The pair then jumped out of their double and into the coxed quad with MacIlldowie and Jack Steel to row back up the course for the final of the quadruple sculls.

Again the Evesham start was awesome but this time they were quickly matched by a Marlow crew who moved two lengths up by the 500m halfway point.

Cox Joe Taylor called for a push and they started to pull back the deficit but the finish line came just too early with both crews beating the previous course record.

Last but not least was the J14 double of Andre Roberts and Lewis Giles whose final was a neck and neck struggle all the way down the course.

It became clear that the victor would come from either Evesham or St Neots and it was the latter who got the decision by 0.8 of a second.
