Mark misses out twice in goalless opening half

2:29pm Saturday 11th October 2008

Evesham Utd 0, Chasetown 0

IT'S all-square at St George's Lane after an action-packed 45 minutes in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

However, Evesham were left regretting a missed penalty and the intervention of the woodwork as they bid to make further progress at the expense of the team that lost in the third round last season to eventual finalists Cardiff City.

Mark Owen was the player involved on both occasions first seeing his third minute volley hit the inside of a post before being hacked off the line by Harry Harris but then easting a glorious chance from 12 yards.

The spot-kick award cane after ten minutes when, according to an assistant referee, Harris had fouled Steve Lutz but Owen's weakly taken kick was pushed aside by Ryan Price.

Dean Perrow hot wide for the visitors after four minutes and then lobbed over with only Nathan Vaughan to beat.

Harris saw yellow after the penalty award while United threatened again after 15 minutes when Michael Batchelor's shot flew a yard too high.

Gary Birch shot side after 21 minutes when allowed a clear run at goal and, when the action switched to the other end, Danny Scheppel headed Simon Fitter's cross over the bar.

Nathan Vaughan produced a brilliant stop to claw Mark Branch's free-kick on the half-hour off the line before a tangle between Danny Hodnett and Perrow, who has already found the net ten times in this season's competition, brought a yellow card for the latter and one for Fitter in the melee that followed.

Deadlock broken: Mark Owen might have wasted this early chance but made amends with the opening goal. Spot-kick sorrow: Mark Owen can't believe he has missed a chance to give Evesham the lead.

Foiled by woodwork: Mark Owen hit a post with this early effort.

Penalty pain: Mark Owen saw his spot-kick saved.
