Pair crash out of cups after extra-time

Droitwich Spa 2, Littleton 1

FOR the 13th time in their last 14 County Cup games, Littleton were drawn away and a fourth time in five years at Droitwich!

On a very heavy pitch and on a bitterly cold afternoon, the visitors lost 2-1 in the quarter-final of the WFA Junior Cup.

The home side started at a cracking pace and threatened to sweep Littleton aside.

Their quick forwards cut through with ease and should have scored after ten minutes but a shot flew narrowly wide.

The stalemate was broken five minutes later with a super goal. A long raking crossfield path was met at pace by the Droitwich right winger and his cross shot from 20 yards gave keeper Danny Edwards no chance.

Littleton were then grateful to their woodwork before they gradually got back into the game. Karl Scott went close and he then set-up Matt Layton six yards out where a cruel bobble spoiled his chances of levelling the tie.

Littleton dominated large periods of the second half when Grant Pinkney went close as the home custodian saved at full-stretch.

Layton was also denied on two occasions before Droitwich had the chance to wrap it up but a penalty was blazed wide.

And it looked like they might pay for that when Tom Beattie made it 1-1 with five minutes left on the watch after a flick-on from Ben Johns.

It was obvious that there was insufficient time to complete extra-time in the normal manner but the referee decided to play ten minutes each way.

And, despite Littleton's offside protests, Droitwich scored the winner in the first period.

Littleton are at home to Midland Combination first division leaders Castle Vale JKS on Saturday while the Reserves, who lost 4-1 at home to Hampton in the league last weekend, travel to Chelmsley Town Res.

There was also extra-time misery for Evesham United A who lost 2-1 at Henley Forest in the second round of the Challenge Urn after the tie was goalless at the end of 90 minutes.

A 2-0 defeat for Shipston Excelsior at Lichfield City completed an unhappy afternoon for local sides with Pershore Town also losing 1-0 at home to Cadbury Athletic in the Premier Division.
