Evesham carry on improving

Caveney Road Surfacing Summer Tennis League.

REIGNING champions Stratford-on-Avon top the Premier Division table for the first time this season, while Evesham continue to climb.

Stratford beat sister side Stratford ‘B’ 4-0 as Inkberrow, who have led all year, slipped to their second defeat of the season, this time to previously bottom-placed Evesham 3-1.

This leaves Inkberrow trailing Stratford by two points and lifts Evesham away from the relegation battle and into mid-table. Moreton-in-the-Marsh stay fourth after a 2-2 draw away to Chipping Campden.

Stratford were always looking favourites to do the double over their club mates Stratford ‘B’. Only ‘B’ team captain Nick Harper and partner Mark Parsons were able to offer any real resistance to their senior side.

Rob Slatter and Callum Bailey (Stratford) beat Harper and Parsons (Stratford ‘B’) 6-0, 6-1, and beat Andy Craig and Graham Marsh (Stratford ‘B’) 6-1, 6-1. Tim Page and Simon West (Stratford) beat Craig and Marsh 6-2, 6-4, and edged out Harper and Parsons 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) in a championship tie-break.

Inkberrow came up against a resurgent Evesham side who are recovering after a poor start. Home pair Paul Everett and Dave Hubbard led the way for Evesham as they beat Graham Price and R Allen (Inkberrow) 6-3, 6-3.

They then disposed of Pete Watson and Alex Woodbridge (Inkberrow) 7-6, 6-3. John Clarke and Chris Francis (Evesham) had close affairs in both their rubbers before losing their opening match to Watson and Woodbridge 3-6, 6-4, 0-1 (5-10). They then defeated Price and Allen 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).

The final match saw Campden and Moreton slug out a 2-2 draw.

Geoff Vaughan and Ollie Coombes (Campden) lost to Will Hale and Brian Lomas (Moreton) 5-7, 4-6, but beat Owain Thomas and Chris Adams (Moreton) 6-4, 6-4. Mark Evans and Mark Jepson (Campden) beat Thomas and Evans 7-6, 6-0, but lost to Hale and Lomas 2-6, 2-6.

Division One’s top-of-the-table clash between Alcester and Bidford was called off to rain. Pershore and Studley shared a 2-2 draw to remain unchanged.
