Evesham United 3, Cambridge City 1 CAMBRIDGE City arrived at St George's Lane unbeaten but left with their record in tatters after rampant Evesham United brushed them aside to make it two straight wins in the Zamaretto League Premier Division.
Young striker Marcus Palmer helped himself to a second-half brace, leading the way to Evesham's first home win of the season.
The Robins made their intentions clear from the start, making it an uncomfortable night for their title-chasing visitors.
Steve Luckett, Michael Hayden and Palmer were all denied by Cambridge keeper Zac Barrett and then Steve Lutz had his header cleared off the line by Tom Pepper as the hosts pressed for an opener.
With six minutes remaining in the first-half the wait was over.
There seemed little danger when Simon Fitter sent in a speculative shot from the right, but it deceived the Cambridge defence and nestled into the far corner of Barrett's net.
Two goals in a minute at the start of the second-half put Evesham firmly in the driving seat.
On 54 minutes, Danny Lennon created an opening for Palmer who gave Barrett no chance with a powerful finish.
Then, 60 seconds later, the former Hereford United front man made it three with another clinical finish leaving Cambridge with a mountain to climb.
Despite Lee Chaffey pulling one back before the end, United held on and move up to 12th with games in hand.
Evesham United: Vaughan, Watson, Hyde, Hodnett, Luckett, Lutz, Fitter, Lennon (Benjamin 67), Palmer, Hands (Thomas 73), Hayden. Subs not used: Costello, Woodley, Gould.
