Shipston target a third straight win

SHIPSTON RFC travel to bottom-placed Midlands Three West (South) side Ledbury on Saturday (ko 2.15pm) buoyed by their second successive victory.

The Mayo Road side moved up to fifth in the table, nine points behind leaders Dunlop with a game in hand on many of their rivals, following a 17-8 home win over Woodrush.

Shipston’s tries came courtesy of George Bird, Tom Corby and Tom Rance. Toby Jones kicked one successful conversion.

This triumph came seven days after a 5-3 victory over Redditch as Shipston resumed their league campaign after the enforced break due to the wintry weather.

These wins mean Shipston’s target of a top-four finish is well within their grasp as they visit the basement boys.

Tom Rance and Andy Hunt are unavailable for Saturday’s clash but Tom Heeley returns.

Ledbury have only recorded one win this season, losing their other 13 matches, including a 142-0 defeat to Dunlop two weeks ago.

Shipston head coach Jez Rance says his young squad have performed well so far this term and has targeted a strong finish to the campaign to realise his current targets.

He said: “The last two games have been pleasing but we won’t take Ledbury lightly.

“We will go there and play our normal game. They have had a couple of really bad results but we will still have to put in the performance to win.

“Hopefully we can get six wins from our last eight games.

“The home matches against Pershore and Dunlop will be tough though.

“If we can keep the players altogether we have a good crop of youngsters coming through. We’ve only got two players aged over 25 in the current team.

“We could do with a couple of old heads in there to help us when things are tough.”
