Drakes Broughton Rovers u11s 5, Pershore United u11s 4.

IN a fiercely contested match between local rivals, Drakes Broughton recovered from a two-goal deficit to record a narrow victory.

On a wet, but perfectly playable pitch, both teams competed strongly with plenty of goalmouth action at both ends.

First to take a lead were Drakes when a cross from the right-hand side close to the deadball line was allowed to reach the goalmouth where a player applied a cool finishing touch.

The lead was short-lived as Alex Stayte found Harry White in space on the left.

His initial shot was parried by the keeper but he followed up to slide into an unguarded net.

Stayte then advanced from the halfway line to fire in the second past an unsighted goalkeeper.

The hosts pulled it back level when United failed to clear their lines and the ball was returned to their box where an unmarked Ben Tilbury scored from a couple of yards.

United began the second-half with a sense of urgency and restored their lead when a George Way throw-in was headed on by White for Stayte to control and again find the net.

He added to this shortly after when the Drakes keeper could only parry a Ronan Alderton shot to his feet for his third and United’s fourth.

Drakes then stepped up their game and were rewarded when a short-range shot was turned into the United net.

A firm header from a corner restored them to parity and, with time running out, a fifth and decisive goal was bundled home from close-range.

The visitors continued to battle but Drakes were determined to hold on for the points.

Evesham United Juniors u11s 0, Newtown Sports Colts u11s 9.

THE game kicked off at Evesham High School on a heavy pitch after the recent bad weather.

Newtown opened the scoring early on with two quick goals from J Smith and H Nurse.

The half continued with both teams playing well and having chances with Newtown keeper E Ward making some fine saves, but the half finished with Newtown four goals in front after Smith completed his hat-trick.

An enforced change of keeper was required at half-time for the visitors due to an injury to Ward, with T Maisey stepping in and making the save of the match halfway through the second-half.

Newtown continued to score freely in the second-half with Smith adding his fourth and the team’s fifth of the day early on.

With about eight minutes to go, the captain for the day M Rawlings rejoined the game and soon got on the scoresheet. This was followed quickly by Smith scoring his fifth off a rebounded shot by J Walwyn.

Rawlings finished off the game with two quick goals for his hat-trick.

Pershore u12s 5, Morton Stanley u12s 0.

PERSHORE faced an under-strength Morton side in what became a one-sided affair.

Only an excellent display in the second-half by the Morton keeper kept the score in single figures.

Pershore opened their account on five minutes through McIlvenny, Phillips the provider.

With Hill, Kimberley, Mellish, Thomas and Edney dominating in midfield, Pershore doubled their lead when the Morton keeper’s save saw the ball fall to Barnett and he fired into the roof of the net.

Two quickly became three when Barnett was brought down in the penalty box for a spot-kick. After a change of keepers he hit the resulting penalty hard and low to the keeper’s right.

The second-half saw a flurry of Pershore substitutions.

Edney finished off a precise through- ball from Parsons to make it four.

With 15 minutes left, Edney flicked the ball behind him and pirouetted in mid-air to direct his shot on the volley into the net.

The Morton keeper made save after save as the hosts dominated the play.

The Pershore man-of-the-match was Edney for his scoring efforts.

Sheppey Swifts u12s 1, Bredon Colts u12s 0.

TOP-of-the-table Bredon were beaten in the league for the first time this season by a Sheppey side that never stopped battling from the first whistle to the last.

The home side were missing four players through injury, but they had the better of the early exchanges with the pace of Sheppey strikers Ollie Brothwood and Cavan Ryan causing all sorts of problems in the Colts’ defence.

Sheppey went closest to opening the scoring in the 10th minute when Brothwood rattled the post from 12 yards following an inch-perfect pass from Danny Tustin.

That proved a wake-up call for Bredon, who rearranged their defence and employed man-to-man marking on the lively Brothwood.

Bredon were now beginning to get into their stride and a shot from Callum Hamblin was well saved by Sheppey keeper Josh Rogers with Colts striker Jake Rhodes firing the rebound over the bar.

Goalless at the interval, Sheppey began the second-half with real purpose and Brothwood, Ryan and substitute Javon Nurse all threatened to score.

But it took a brave save from Rogers to deny Bredon the opening goal, smothering Hamblin’s shot from close-range.

But Sheppey would soon hit back. Elliot Enoch lobbed over the bar before Brothwood raced on to a through-ball to fire past keeper Freddie Downes, only to see his effort disallowed for offside.

A quick interchange of passes created an opening for Sheppey’s Brothwood who outpaced two defenders before rounding the keeper and slotting home.

Sheppey were now playing with confidence with the rock-solid back-four of Joe Sandham, Max Lowe, Harry Bermingham and Sam Brookes constantly thwarting Bredon’s attempts to get back into the game.

Indeed, it was Sheppey who looked like adding to their score with efforts from Brothwood, Nurse and Ryan and a cross-shot from Brookes all saved by Downes.

Sheppey have now won their last seven matches in all competitions and, with games in hand over the four teams above, could well have a say in the race for the title.
