EVESHAM Rowing Club led the way at their annual Head of the Avon competition.

This event was held over 4,500 metres from Chadbury Wier back to the rowing club and 14 new records were set, six of these by Evesham.

The first record went to the master ‘C’ double scull of Richard and Ian Evans in a time of 17 minutes 10 seconds. They beat the previous record by 23 seconds which was set by Stourport in 1999.

The next record to be broken was in the intermediate three single sculls by Graham Giles 19.08, beating the existing record by just one second.

The master ‘C’ novice double scull of Steve Penrose and Karl Tryner got their first win and set a course record in 19.47.

The women’s master ‘B’ novice double scull of Marie Keys and Nicki Perry also managed their first victory and set a course record in 21.49.

Debbie Staite also set a course record in the women’s master ‘B’ single sculls in 21.20. She then teamed up with Tracey Stapleton, Dan Walker and Josh Rogers in the senior coxless quads and set the last Evesham record in 16.35.

Other wins came in the J15 coxed quad of Alex Bartram, Alex Staite, Peter Scharrer and Toby Edwards, coxed by Joe Lord, in 18.20, the latter won the novice single sculls in 21.13.

The J18 double scull of Jacob Organ and Will Coldicott also won in 17.19. Rupert Malein won the J18 single sculls in 18.50 and Steve Bladwin (19.59) in the master ‘D’ single sculls. Evesham wins followed in the women’s novice coxed fours, Patrick Sullivan won the J16 single sculls and Georgii Walklett in 22.09 in the WJ15 single sculls.
