CAPTAIN’S CROWN: The Vale Club’s Lady Captain’s Charity Am-am winners Pauline Laight, Kerri and Stanley Thomas (from the sponsors), Margaret Henson, Cheryl Wileman, Sally Smith and lady captain Pauline Lee line up at the club.
NINETY-TWO women competed for the Lady Captain’s Charity Am-am at the Bishampton-based Vale club.
The competition attracted 47 golfers from 15 other clubs and a rare sunny day inspired fine play with a close finish.
The host club’s Sally Smith, Pauline Laight, Cheryl Wileman and Margaret Henson were the champions with 76 points.
Bransford’s June Atkinson, Jenny Bennett, Pauline Wetton and Jan Bettison (75) followed ahead of Carol Weeks, Kate Dennison and Gail Howells from Thornbury with Sue Franklin from Wishaw (74 on count-back).
The longest drive in the silver division was by Sally Smith and the bronze went to Deb Smith, while the nearest- the-pin honours went to Shona Rollins and Val Perfect.
The prizes were presented by Kerri Thomas, of main sponsors Thomas Brothers, and his son Stanley.
The lady captain’s charity, the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, received £1,140 from the raffle.
Meanwhile, 13 women braved the elements for the eighth medal of the season.
Results, Silver Division: 1 Lyn Robinson 89 gross 77 nett on count-back, 2 Pauline Kay 96-77; Bronze: 1 Jas Bishop 106-81, 2 Shona Rollins 106-83; Copper: 1 Pat Hird 110-80, 2 Sally Hutchinson 114-83; lowest gross and nett: Robinson 89–12- 77.
A full field of 40 senior Vale men competed in wet conditions in a stableford qualifier.
Division One: 1 Jim Rushworth 38 points seven handicap, 2 Tony Hampson 36-9, 3 Clive Gilbert 35-13.
Division Two: 1 John Icke 39-19, 2 Brian Leggett 36-26, 3 David Millard 35-21.
Evesham club seniors held a strong Worcester Golf and Country Club team to a 3½- 3½ draw with the result in the balance for several of the pairings.
The home winners were Neil Croft and Derek Stroud (by two holes), Peter Gilbert and Mike Brumage (6&5) and Dave Hartland and Bryan Rogers (3&2).
Ian Facer seniors invitation day with his guest John Adams from Redditch with 41 stableford points.
Harvington Golf Society members returned to Monmouth only to endure terrible weather and a course that was only just about playable.
Regular winner Paul Archer splashed around to record 37 points and win the Challenge Plate.
Andy Basford secured the Councillor’s Cup prize for over 55s with 34, while Steve Young hit the longest drive and Rob Millward won the nearest-the-pin prize.
