ILMINGTON Primary School Eagles held aloft the Great Britain Under 13s Floorball Cup after beating a strong Scottish team in Gloucester.

Seven teams contested the title at the GL1 Leisure Centre with St David’s Dragons from Moreton- in-Marsh confident of retaining their title.

They also fielded a second string in Marsh Monsters, while Cotswold Schools’ League champions Ilmington were bolstered by their old boys from Chipping Campden School.

Ilmington defeated Scottish side Hawick Hawks 8-2 on the first day and won the pool with 18 points to go straight through to the final.

Fifth-placed Dragons managed six and Monsters finished bottom after failing to win. Ilmington faced Hawks again and contested one of the most exciting finals since the championships started five years ago.

Both teams were skilful but Hawks, who beat Shooting Stars 4-3 in the semis, enjoyed the physical edge against their quicker opponents.

However, the difference was in the finishing and William Palmer (2) and Matthew Davis quickly put the Warwickshire side three goals up.

Ben Storrie and Jarred Davies pulled two back but Palmer, earlier lucky to avoid a sin-binning, made it 4-2 for his 18th goal of the competition.

However, there was still time for Ben Richardson’s effort to deflect cruelly past Ilmington keeper Thomas Cawley before half-time. Joshi Gibb extended the lead in the second period but Hawks keeper Lachlann Lightfoot then frustrated the Cotswold outfit with an impressive man-of-the-match display.

Davies made it 5-4 and then Gibb was sin-binned but the Scottish side’s potential equaliser from tournament top-scorer Storrie was disallowed.

Both teams had chances to net in the final few seconds but the defences held out to see Ilmington crowned champions.

In the play-off matches, Gloucester- based Widden Wolves defeated Monsters 7-0 to take sixth place and Dragons routed Widden Warriors 5-0 to earn a shot at third spot only to lose 3-1 to Shooting Stars.
