Bailey is hero as Castle take win

BROADWAY suffered a onewicket home defeat to struggling Elmley Castle in the Cotswold Hills League Premier Division.

The hosts were reeling at 33-2 following the loss of Gary Evans (18) and Marcus Humpston for a duck.

This saw Nigel Evans join his younger brother Mark and they built steadily until the partnership was ended when the total was on 87, with the latter out for 27.

When Jamie Powell and Nigel Evan (32) followed, three wickets had fallen without a run being added.

Matt Phillips joined Gary Hawkins (21) and smashed 69 from 62 balls, while Andy Beale (21 not out) added 134 runs as only two further wickets would later fall as Broadway closed on 221-7.

Elmley’s reply faltered badly from the off as Powell sent back Cross (4) and Cawson (3) inside eight overs.

When Adam Smallman (3-36) accounted for Corbett (23), Brown (3) and S Cooper (4) in consecutive overs, the visitors crumbled to 55-5.

However, Hemming and N Cooper put on 100 in 20 overs, also aided by an injury to Smallman, before N Cooper (50) departed and J Bailey quickly followed without troubling the scorers, both to Cutler (2-47).

Hemming blasted 35 off his next 10 balls before Humpston (2-16) struck with consecutive balls to remove the youngster for 85 and Clarke.

With three balls left and still three runs needed, W Bailey (19no) flicked a leg side full toss for four.
