Hitman Holgate strikes in stalemate
12:00pm Thursday 27th September 2012 in Sport
DEBUTANT Danny Holgate earned Evesham United a 1-1 draw at Paulton Rovers in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West.
Holgate, signed from Midland Alliance side Continental Star, opened the scoring on 32 minutes.
The giant striker received the ball 30 yards out before smashing home a low drive beyond Rovers keeper Kyle Phillips.
Paulton, however, were level three minutes after half-time as United failed to clear their lines, allowing Kris Miller time and space to beat Dean Coleman.
A low-key affair then came to life with both sides going all out for the win.
Marcus Palmer went closest for United, first striking the Paulton woodwork from distance and then, after rounding Phillips, he could not find a team-mate to apply the finishing touch.
Henry Eze also went close with a header from Leigh Downing’s corner but Paulton finished the game on top without finding a way past Coleman.
The United custodian got a hand to direct Craig Loxton’s snap-shot over before denying Miller and the influential Nick McCootie to ensure a draw.
Due to Evesham United’s FA Trophy exit, their next match is not until Saturday, October 6, at home to Poole Town.
